A new study by a management professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, looks at 240 professionals at a midsize company and finds that the more telecommuters in an office, the less likely it is that others in the office are satisfied with their jobs and likely to remain with the company. This article notes that the reasons for this dissatisfaction are varied, but could be due to co-worker perceptions that they have less flexibility, a greater workload and frustration from trying to coordinate and interact with a more extensive and remote network of co-workers.

With over 100 million U.S. telecommuters expected by 2010, this article calls on managers to actively address the pressure that telecommuting can bring on main office work cultures. The author suggests a few options for managers who want to mitigate some of the damages, including increasing face-to-face contact with co-workers when telecommuters are in the office and providing office-bound employees with greater job autonomy.
