Companies that began designing environmentally friendly plant-covered “green roofs” some three years ago are now offering clients vertical plant installations called “green walls.” This article discusses two such companies, one in New York and the other in Ontario, whose offerings help to clean office air, enthuse cubicle dwellers and entice customers into stores, spas and cafes. Their green walls typically cost between $60 and $125 per square foot to install and consist of slow-growing, shallow-rooted plants grown on wall-mounted frames complete with their own closed water systems. Once installed, all that is needed are spotlights or skylights, plant food and a battery to run the water filtration system. The money saved on wall painting and art usually goes toward an office plant maintenance contract.
